A damaged directory tree cannot be audited properly. The audit may "hang" or give incorrect results. The audit uttility will log an error to the automatic audit log when a problem is encountered.
To repair a damaged directory structure use utilities such as "Norton Utilities", "Nuts and Bolts" or "Spin Write". CHKDSK and SCANDISK will fix most but not all problems.

Note: It is possible for the utilites to say : "all OK" when in fact problems remain.
