Creating a 32 bit LAN audit data collection diskette for stand-alone PCs using 32 bit utilities

NETKEEPER EXPRESS can also collect data from computers that are not linked to your network.

In order to do this, you have to create a data collection diskette. You will run the audit from the diskette and use the UPDATE FROM SURVEY function to update your main database.

The data collection diskettes include the audit programs and the audit files required by NETKEEPER EXPRESS.

CREATING A MASTER HARDWARE DATA COLLECTION DISKETTE FOR 32 BIT SYSTEMS
Use the Build Collection Disk function. Use the 32 bit collection utility unless you need to audit old computers. The 16 bit and the 32 bit audit utilities can write to the same database. Use the login scripts to select the correct utility if you need to run both types of utilities.

The BUILD AUDIT COLLECTION DISK function will automatically create a collection disk set to audit stand-alone PCs. The utility creates either a one disk set or a two disk set.

The collection disk is used to collect audit information from stand-alone PCs or from PCs attached to the network that you do not want to audit through the network. After you collect the data from stand-alone PCs, merge the collected data into the main database using the UPDATE FROM SURVEY function.

Differences between the one disk set and the two disk set.
The same data is collected with the one disk set or the two disk set. However the two disk set has the advantage that you can write protect the program disk to avoid transmitting a virus from PC to PC. The two disk set also has the advantage that there is more space to collect data since one diskette is totally dedicated to data files.

Creating the one disk set.
You will need one formatted blank diskette before you start creating a new disk set.

Insert the formatted blank diskette into the destination drive.

Note: you can also create the disk set to a directory on your hard drive or network drive. This blank set can then be copied to your diskettes.

Steps to create the one disk set:

Enter the title of the disk set, for example collection disk for stand-alone computers.

Enter the target directory, the target directory is the drive and path and where you will build the new one disk set. For example a:\ or n:\nk\collection .

Select one disk in the type of audit set box.

Set the audit intervals as needed. The audit interval is the time in days between audits. You can select to skip the configuration audit, the software audit or both. For example, to run only the hardware audit check both skip configuration audit and skip software audit. Note that setting the audit intervals will have no effect when running the audit from a diskette since the program cannot check the main database.

Note: the hardware audit will always run whenever either the configuration audit or the software audit runs.

Set to the audit options as needed. If the option is not listed on the screen enter the option in the "options" field.

Note: See your user guide to view the available command line parameter options.

Check display entry screen to display a full-screen during the audit or you can enter additional data. This is the manual audit note.

Check the DO THE Y2K AUTOMATIC TESTS to run the year 2000 automatic tests.

Check the USE ALTERNATE SOFTWARE SCRIPT to use software script other than the default SWSCRIPT.INI file. This option is useful to audit network servers or one of a kind audits.

Check NO CPU TEST to skip the CPU tests.

Check NO VIDEO TEST to skip the video system checks, this option only skips direct video checks. The test will always collect video system registry entries.

Check FORCE POLL DURING AUDIT to force the display of the polling screen even if the user has been polled before. Selecting FORCE POLL DURING AUDIT will also set COPY POLL SCREEN DEFINITION FILES.

Set the batch options as needed. The batch options modify the audit batch file that is created by the utility.

Check COPY CPU LOOKUP FILE to copy your CPU identification data to the collection diskette.

Check PAUSE BEFORE UNINSTALLING to add a pause in the batch file before deleting the temporary directory on the audited PC.

Check COPY POLL SCREEN DEFINITION FILES to copy the end user poll definition file to the audit diskette. This option cannot be un-checked if FORCE POLL DURING AUDIT is selected.

Click OK to create the collection disk. The name of the audit batch file on the collection disk is AUDIT32.BAT.

To create a two disk set follow the same instructions as above but select TWO DISK in the Type of Audit Set box.
