Disable "Browse master" in W98 workstations
Document ID : 000-000465 Created: 3/27/2000 Last changed on: 3/27/2000

A user reports:

This may be totally unrelated, but bear with me... there might be a
connection.

We have a Win98 network and DSL. Our Unix box controls the DSL. The Unix
machine was getting about 200k per second transfer rate while the Windows
machines were getting only 25k. A local TCPIP guro told us to check the
settings of the "Browse Master."

Now, I had never heard of "Browse Master." Went to NetWork
Neighborhood>Properties>File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks>Properties
and there it was!

Browse Master (supposedly) should be disabled. When we disabled it, and
rebooted, the Windows machines were almost 9 times faster across the
network!

THe setting is in :
>I use Win98 network and DSL also. I tried to find "Browse Master" and the
>only 2 items that popped up were boxes to check for file and print sharing.
>Am I looking in the wrong place. Things seemed to slow down a little when I
>installed ICS (Internet Connect Sharing) so everyone has access to the DSL.

It's in the scrolling list of Adapters, Protocols, etc. Most of the
time, on an average, networked PC it's scrolled out of sight below the
visible window. (took me a couple minutes myself... )

May also apply to win NT

Windows NT also participates in the discussion/fight over who is the
Browse Master. I think you have to edit the registry to change the
settings in NT, instead of in the Network Setup as in Windows 95/98.
Search for Browse Master or Network Browsing on Microsoft's web site.
In any case, if all of the workstations have Browse Master disabled, the
Server automatically becomes the Browse Master because there is no one
to "fight" with.

The guru's story was that the machines "fight each other" to be the "browse
master." By disabling it, the fighting stops.

Don't know if this helps, or even if it exists in NT, but it was worth a
shot.
