You must install the MS SQL Client on the workstation before you can connect to a SQL server. This is both a licensing and a technical aspect of connecting to a MS SQL server.

Some versions of Windows (R), W2K for example, already include the MS SQL client. Consult your MS SQL documentation for additional details.

Note for Crystal Reports
Crystal may need some dlls that are installed only by the SQL Server client
